The Shanxi Forestry and Grassland Bureau, in collaboration with the Shanxi Institute of Forestry Sciences, is advancing the wild plant rescue and protection project, achieving comprehensive and systematic security for key wild plants.

They have published the Shanxi Wild Plant List (2024 Edition), detailing 2,743 wild plant species and 137 artificially cultivated species, laying a solid data foundation for conservation efforts.

For six national key wild plant species, including Taxus mairei and Lonicera oblata, the research team at the Shanxi Institute of Forestry Sciences has established 12 fixed monitoring sites in their natural habitats and equipped them with 12 sets of solar-powered habitat monitoring devices.

The institute has collected 345 germplasm resources of six tree species, studied their breeding techniques, and cultivated over 116,000 seedlings. It has also developed three patents, including a method to improve the germination rate and survival rate of young seedlings of the Lonicera oblata, injecting strong innovative energy into plant protection.

The ultimate goal of biodiversity conservation is to reintroduce bred seedlings back into nature. From the provincial-level Mianshan Nature Reserve to the national-level Lishan Nature Reserve, 36,300 precious plants are thriving in their natural environment. In the 10-mu (0.67 hectares) relocation protection demonstration area in Qixian and Xiangfen experimental base, 1,940 plants have found their "new homes".

"In recent years, we have continuously provided diverse guarantees for species continuity," stated Zhai Yu, a senior engineer at the Shanxi Institute of Forestry Sciences. "These 'green immigrants' have not only expanded the living space of species but also revitalized the ecosystem."
