Shanxi achieves progress in Yellow River basin ecological protection
Updated: 2025-07-07
Shanxi province has made significant strides in ecological protection along the Yellow River basin. Recent projects, such as the Jixian county tourism road greening initiative, have led to increased vegetation and improved water quality along the riverbanks.
Shanxi has implemented a comprehensive governance framework, including three ecological barrier zones and four key restoration areas. Annual forest maintenance has exceeded 950,000 mu (63,333 hectares), with 276 provincial-level forest villages established. Water pollution control efforts have targeted 19 counties and 16 tributaries.
Notable successes include the restoration of Wuxing Lake in Yongji city, where 2,700 mu of aquatic plants were planted and 448,000 silver carp released to improve water quality. The province's eco-industries, such as specialty agriculture and forestry, generated 70.7 billion yuan ($9.7 billion) in output value in 2024, with annual growth exceeding 7 percent.
"Shanxi is committed to green development and regional cooperation to ensure the Yellow River's sustainable future," said Yuan Tongsuo, director of the Shanxi Forestry and Grassland Bureau.
